Glikogen. Glycogen refers to the analog of starch which is a glucose polymer that functions as energy storage in plants It has a similar structure to amylopectin which is a component of starch more extensively branched and compact than starch This polymer of glucose residues linked by a (14) and a (16) glycosidic bonds.

Glikogen je polisaharid in predstavlja osnovno obliko uskladiščene glukoze v živalskih glivnih in nekaterih bakterijskih celicah Pri živalih je energija kot glikogen kratkoročno shranjena predvsem v jetrnih in skeletnih mišičnih celicah medtem ko dolgoročno energijsko zalogo predstavljajo trigliceridi v adipocitah (maščobnih celicah) Ta polisaharid se v celicah nahaja v obliki.
